Merchandise is use in marketing films to advertise the film and increase awareness of it. People may also try to capitalize off of the success of the film and sell related items.
Some films will do tie-ins with a fast food restaurant to try and get young children interested in the film.
Any merchandise made will have to be appropriate for the audience. For example a children's film would release toys along side the film.
